CHAPTER 3

Sean called her every hour on the hour, and he left a voicemail each time he called until, by the end of the day, her mailbox was full and all he could do was hang up. Then he texted her instead. But he got no response. Not to the twenty emails and not to a hundred more text messages.

He knew he was getting what he deserved. He was an asshole, a cheater, a liar. A traitor. And worst off, he’d hurt her exactly in the way he never thought he would do to any girl--much less Lily, the only girl he’d ever cared about this much. He didn’t even realize how much he’d wanted her until now that he was so close to losing her. They’d had everything together. They’d been wonderful together. And he’d let that all go for someone as ridiculous as Mady, who was so completely not worth it.

He went to work just because staying at home seemed like it might literally kill him. Everything in his apartment reminded him of her from the coffee mug she liked to use when she was there to the couch where they’d done it once and had almost been caught by Patrick walking in early when his date had ditched him. Every moment that his mind was not busy with something was another moment he had to picture Lily and the fact that he had lost her forever. She would never call him back. Never talk to him. Never even grace him with the pathetic compromise of being his friend, which would have been better than never seeing her at all.

He called her number again, but it went straight to the voicemail lady, who told him that the mailbox was full and that he should try again. He would keep trying until he got through to her. He would turn into one of those stalker ex-boyfriends. He would sit outside her work, outside her front porch if he had to, if he thought it would help him get her back. He was one more night of no-sleep away from doing just that.

But then she called him back.

Sean was so shocked that he answered the phone and just pressed it to his ear, completely forgetting to say anything. He could hear noises on the other side, and then Lily’s voice spoke.

“Hello?”

“Lily, hi,” he breathed. He could feel the sigh all through his body, releasing all the pent up anxiety. “How are you?” He winced at how formal and polite that sounded.

“Good.” She paused. “I got all your text messages and voicemails. I haven’t listened to all the voicemails--there were a lot of them.”

“Yeah.” He cleared his throat, glad she couldn’t see his face lighting up with embarrassment. He’d turned into one of those psycho dickheads who stalked their ex-girlfriends and couldn’t it in their heads that the relationship was over. “Good, I’m glad.”

“Anyway, sorry I haven’t picked up or called back. I just needed some time to think about what happened.
